I have been to brunch places.
I have been to pop-up restaurants.
But I hadn’t had a Bay Area Brunch in a pop-up restaurant.
Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen has popped up at Heart Wine Bar in San Francisco’s Mission District on Saturdays from 10am – 2pm. Judging from the steady stream of customers when we arrived at 10:30am until we left, it is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
The menu states that “Wise Sons bakes, brines, and smokes our own products.” J is partial to bagels and lox so he had the open faced Beauty’s Bagel & House Smoked Steelhead Trout. The sesame bagel was toasted, nice and chewy, with a generous slather of cream cheese. The trout was fantastic especially with the briny capers and sliced cucumbers lightly pickled with dill ($11). This isn’t a brunch item that I typically crave but I’d order this again in a heartbeat.
I am partial to sweets so I ordered the Babka French Toast (the larger portion of course). Honestly, I had never had babka before and clearly I have been missing out. It is basically a scrumptious cake with swirls of chocolate so what’s not to like? Toast a couple slices up so the chocolate is oozing and melted, add a generous dollop of tangy cream, and sprinkle some poached peach slices on top and what you have is an amazing and decadent version of French Toast ($9).
Add a couple glasses of iced coffee ($2 each) and buy some deliciously buttery Rugelach for later ($3 for 4 pieces) and your first (but undoubtedly not your last) Bay Area Brunch pop-up experience will be complete.
