This is another one of my Bay Area Brunch on the go recommendations in the most unlikely of places: Westfield Mall. Typically I avoid this madhouse on the weekends but when I was there recently I found a most delicious discovery.
I was headed to BART when the inconspicuous and cute little Bloem ‘n Sugar shop caught my eye. ‘Course I couldn’t resist. It is in the lower level of the older portion of Westfield Mall so unless you are headed to BART, easy to miss. And that would be oh so sad for you!
There are 2 types of waffles to choose from: Belgian and Liège (both $4). Thanks to Wikipedia, I now know that in addition to their different shapes, the Belgian is “lighter, thicker, and crispier and has larger pockets compared to other waffle varieties” and the Liège is a “richer, denser, sweeter, and chewier waffle.”
Waffle toppings are $.50 each or as many as you want for $2 and there are many to choose from as well as some suggested combos. I didn’t want to commit a brunch faux pas by drowning my pretty waffle in too many accessories so I went basic: a Liège Waffle with Maple Syrup and Strawberries.
I’ll admit that I didn’t have the highest expectations since I could see they were pre-made and reheated but I was pleasantly surprised. The ingredients were of a high quality, especially the fresh strawberries. It was the perfect brunch on the go as well as a tasty afternoon mall snack. Extra kudos for the compostable container.
I would brave the Saturday mall scene for a Bloem ‘n Sugar waffle fix. ‘Nuff said.
