Does afternoon tea at Crown & Crumpet count as a Bay Area Brunch?
Well one tier of our tea service looked like this:
Scones are one of my favorite breakfast pastries and Crown & Crumpet makes great ones. The one I tried had dried cherries in it and was even better slathered with lemon curd, clotted cream, and jam. (I tried ’em all of course. I am the Triple Crown winner (loser?) of Scone Condiments.) This was my first time trying a crumpet which reminded me of a thinner, buttery, chewy English muffin. I’m sticking to scones but kudos to you crumpet for having a sport named after you.
The top tier of our tea service looked like this:
Mini-sandwiches sans crusts with fillings like Ratatouille, Egg Salad, Cucumbers and Cream Cheese, Tuna, Chicken, and Turkey seem more like lunch fare to me. My typical lunch sandwiches are far less ladylike but I liked the variety offered here. Favorite: the flavorful and spicy Chicken, Least favorite: the soggy Tuna.
Crown & Crumpet takes off the kid gloves to throw some serious punches in the dessert department. I dutifully had a taste of the two types of airy macaroons, the pate de fruit, the multi-layered opera cake, and the cookie bar that reminded me of a dolled up Fig Newton blinged out with pecans. All gorgeous and delicious!
(Note: One of the girls swears that everything tastes even better with your pinky finger extended. Give it a try. Makes for good photo opps in any case.)
So our surprise bridal shower / afternoon tea at C&C had a bit of everything, breakfast and lunch, sweet and savory. Much like a good brunch should!
