DEEP FRIED FRENCH TOAST.
Fred’s Coffee Shop’s beloved Bay Area Brunch item gets the collective thumbs up by everyone from my 8 year old nephew to J’s 72 year old dad. And us of course. My sister said it reminded her of a donut. Like an amazingly-delicious-bready-buttery-syrupy-heart-attack-on-a-plate-type-donut. It tastes even better with some of Fred’s bacon which is thick cut and deep fried. (All fat free of course. Sheeyah right!)
Fred’s is our regular Sausalito brunch spot for other reasons as well. The service is always incredibly friendly and portions are b-i-g. I usually get one of their omelettes, most recently with tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, and cheddar cheese. It comes with a generous amount of hash browns (next time I will ask for them to be extra crispy) and your choice of toast. Lots of great looking sandwich options as well. And now they even have mimosas! Although coffee is in the restaurant’s name, I think the coffee here is just ok. Isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?
You can sit at one of their large communal tables, grab a seat the counter, or if it is a nice day, one of the tables outside. I think I enjoyed my perch at the counter the best because you get to see The Man aka the Chef who makes it all happen yet somehow makes it all look so easy. No reservations here though but when we went today at noon we were surprised to find that there wasn’t a wait. It was meant to be.
